Squid and Squidguard not starting after reboot

After a reboot my Squid and Squidguard services are always stopped.

After the reboot, if I try to start Squid it starts then immediately stops again. Same for Squidguard.

To get them to run again, I have to disable squidguard. At that point Squid starts correctly, but obviously I have no web filtering.

Then I have to go to squidguard -> blacklists and manually update the blacklist (shalla). After the download completes I can then re-enable squidguard and everything works correctly.

Next reboot same thing all over again.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here? Or is this just how it works? Ideally, I could reboot my pfSense without manual interaction to get it to work again.

This is now written in the SquidGuard GUI (in bold red) and shown as post-install instructions. Hopeless, people still won't read.

I understand why you get frustrated, as you think that text is clear enough that everyone should understand if they read it. However, I did read that text…

I thought since I had manually updated the black list, then assigned categories, that I had done what it was indicating. This was reinforced by the fact that when I enabled it after doing so, it started and worked correctly. I certainly did not read it to mean that I needed to go make a custom category and apply it to create the blacklist directories (as referenced in the workaround post).

I get it now that 'adding/selecting a category' isn't the same as 'setup a category'.

I appreciate the other post that gave the link to the workaround email. I did search last night before posting, but for whatever reason I didn't find it, or more likely I overlooked it - because I just searched again and found it just fine.

Thanks all. I do try to not post things that are already documented - I have no problem digging in and RTFM. Sorry I missed it this time.

You can be a jerk about it all you want, it really doesn't bother me in the least. I'm pointing out that if the text means 'create a custom category', it should say 'create a custom category'. "Set up" is an ambiguous term, and can be interpreted different ways.

Hey while we're at it, let's look at the docs - https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/SquidGuard_package. It doesn't say you need to create a custom category there either. Weird.

If you don't want to improve it based on real user feedback that's fine - stand on your high horse that everyone should read and interpret the exact same way you do.

Feel free not to comment on my posts in the future, I'll get help elsewhere - and in fact, the help that fixed my issue didn't come from you in this thread anyway.

And while at it, I did NOT write the docs. So, I went through the trouble to put a post-install message there, to put instructios with a link to details into the GUI, and it's all my fault because - oh noes - "set up a custom category" is "ambiguous term".
