If I do a "Reset to factory defaults" on 2.3 with an APU platform (or any serial console platform), will I have to break out the serial cables and continue the config or is there a mechanism now in place to use some defaults for the network interfaces?

Same as it was on 2.2.x there last I saw. The defaults in /conf.default/config.xml are em0/em1 and I don't think any auto-assignment code has made it in yet, if it will at all for 2.3.

Would it be too much to ask that this gets pencilled into the roadmap even if it is 2.4.x ? It sure would be nice not to have to resort to the serial cable.

I have had a version of this around for a while now. I just integrated it again with the current master. It would be really good to have this (or some other design and implementation that achieves similar) in a release.

It would be really nice to be able to setup any of Alix, APU, SG-series… from factory default without needing a serial console connection.

PFSENSE team, did you add this to the 2.3 BETA? I just did a factory defaults on an APU and the unit went to the default IP address instead of making me break out the USB cable!!!!!

            Thank you!!!

The PR was merged to master (2.3) on 11 Dec 2015, so it has been working like that since then. I am enjoying being able to test stuff and reset to factory defaults whenever I like without having to do anything on the serial console.
