[Resolved by 2.2.6]pfSense 2.2.5 on VMWare - Restore Times-Out

I recently had to re-install pfSense after a day of very weird and unacceptable behavior. Now I find that I cannot restore from any of my backups. Web interface grinds away for awhile then spits out "Safari can’t open the page “xx.xx.xx.xx/diag_backup.php” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again.". I also get the same sort of answer using Chrome on OS X, IE on Windoze, or Chrome on Windoze. I also notice a message on the bottom of Chrome that reads "Waiting for xx.xx.xx.xx" right up until it stops trying. Selecting something less than "All" as the Restore option makes no difference.

12/16 - ADDITIONAL INFO: The backup configure xml file is 3.8MB. Also, I have tried to upload the config file using Diagnostics/Command Prompt. Still times out at somewhere near 60 seconds.

I've noticed this as well. My simple migration to a vm turned into a hassle with trying to redo all the config by hand.
Even to the point of isolating each restore area did not help.
Is there a log-file that cover this?

Thank you very much for your post. I was starting to worry that my post did't make enough sense to anyone. And, in a way, it is good to know that I am not the only one experiencing this. Now, if we could just find some heavyweight to drop in and suggest some solutions. I'm running out of ideas and I REALLY don't want to start reconfiguring this beast from scratch… again. I thought I was doing the right thing with all these backups.

There's nothing in the System log after this happens?

Several more attempts. Absolutely nothing shows up in the system logs. In fact, the latest entry there is about 36 hours ago.

Let's do this. Since this is moving rather slow and my network is struggling, does anyone know of some other way to get my backup config file into the proper file location in pfSense 2.2.5 on VMware? Thanks.

if you can ssh, then you can scp the file in place and replace /conf/config.xml with your file

I've been running pfsenses on vmware esxi for years now …. never had an issue to restore a backup by webgui. this is odd & needs to be investigated, working around it is not a solution

So you get validation from a 1 post wonder that he had a problem restoring a config as well… Well must be a pfsense issue then <rolleyes>Dude there is something wrong with your desktop or underlying network/vm setup -- you state in your other thread on the exact same subject that you have a problem moving files from your desktop to your vms... That is broke... I have no such issues, 99.9999999999999999% of the planet do not have that issue.. If they did then vms as a whole would not be workable solutions to pretty much anything..
You have a problem... Fix it before you run your router on a vm...</rolleyes>

There was a lighttpd bug in 2.2.5 that caused config sync to fail in some cases, it's conceivable that the same problem might make this fail on 2.2.5 as well. Update to 2.2.6 and give it another shot.

jimp - thank you soooooooo much for your input. I saw the email from Chris Buechler this morning and carefully read all associated info. This certainly sounds like my issue might be related. Updating to 2.2.6 certainly couldn't hurt anything at this point.

For johnpoz - sorry that I was not clear. My issue with moving file/files from desktop to VM as an alternative to webgui is not yet related to hardware/software. It is really more about me knowing the steps. I can work fairly well WITHIN each environment, but I'm not handy working BETWEEN OS X and VMWare guest. Is that clear?
