I had a problem with my kids getting lag during their league of legends and steam games online.  I have 10 devices in the home with nextflix, youtube, etc… on a 20 Mb/s internet connection. I purchased new N and AC routers and and added dd-wrt and Opendrt without successfully fixing the problem.  I finally decided to to install pfsense on an old desktop with one motherboard Lan port and a wireless G wifi card. This setup up works flawlessly!  I am using a wireless G card with better performance than any of the N and AC routers I used previously.  I can run netflix, 2 youtube streams, and 2 online games on wifi with no buffering, stuttering or lag!  I have not had to setup any traffic shaping or bandwith control/limits on pfsense.  This system runs great.  I am thrilled with pfsense.  I may never upgrade to N or AC again...

I did install squid, and squidguard to help keep the online environment safe for the kids.  I also setup a nightime shutdown rule for kid devices also.  This is a great home router setup that I believe is much better than any of the store wifi routers IMO. :)

Well with only 20mbps internet connection, G is fine..  See if you want to stay on G if you have say a 100mbps internet connection or moving files around your local network to or from a wifi connected client.

As to your problem with your routers.. Have no idea how you had them setup..  But now you could leverage them as just APs, I would never in a million years go back to G speeds.. Its like watching paint dry compared to AC..

As to whitexp shutdown rule question..  Just create a schedule for firewall rules that either allow or block the IPs of the devices you want to have a schedule for.

To block the kids I did the following.  I made a schedule named it nightime and setup the static ip's of the kids devices and the hours of the night for the rule.  I then made one rule to block access and a rule to reject access on the LAN.

Hi johnpoz ,  Thx for your reply. The wireless-G works flawlessly great!  I have a long high gain antenna on the G nic card.  I still have the N and an AC routers as well in case I upgrade to 100Mb+.  I don't have any hiccups/stutters/buffering with my current setup so I will venture back to N and AC when higher speed or more distance is desired or necessary…
