I have override for domain.com set to a specific DNS server. Lookups for hostx.domain.com forward correctly as expected. However, hostx.subdomain.domain.com does not hit the override. I've added subdomain.domain.com as a new override entry as a workaround, which takes care of the immediate issue.

Is this a bug, or is this expected behavior? From where I sit, I expected anything.whatever.anythingelse.someotherstupidsubdomain.domain.com to hit the override just by specifying domain.com.

On closer look some subdomain hosts seem to be resolving fine. Not quite sure what the root cause is yet but it seems likely it's not a pfSense issue.

It will forward all subdomains too. Guessing it's probably external in that your forwarded target server didn't reply as you expected.
