Suricate signature issues
-
I have a new suricate install and I'm getting errors. I can't tell if this signature is seeing a hit and parsing is failing, or if theres an error trying to load the signature, or what. Its a brand new install. Be running for about 24 hours. Its package 2.1.9.1. I'm using only the Snort community ruleset. I've set a HOME_NET alias with two subnets in it. Everything else is pretty much just the default settings. If you need any more info please just let me know. Thanks so much!!

There are about 700-800 Snort rules (found in the Snort VRT rules and many of them also in the Snort Community Rules) that use rule options and keywords that Suricata does not yet decode and recognize. So the errors you see are normal, and instead of just croaking completely, Suricata logs the error and skips loading the rule. The downside is of course no traffic is ever inspected against that rule.
The Emerging Threats rules are produced in a version tailored to Suricata. That version is automatically used when you enable Emerging Threats rules. There are requests on the Suricata upstream Redmine site for including compatibility with all the Snort rule options, but not all are completely supported yet.
So short answer is you must accept that a number of Snort rules will not work in Suricata. Many folks using Suricata use only the Emerging Threats rules and/or write their own custom rules.

Ok great. THank you Bill. I can definitely live with that!
