I have an OpenVPN server set up on my Sense box that also handles firewall, NAT, etc. I need to connect from outside the network so I can initiate remote desktop sessions. If I connect to OpenVPN from my Mac, everything is fine, I can access the LAN side and start a remote desktop session on a VM running on the LAN. In the Microsoft Remote Desktop app I'm providing the IP of the VM, no gateway.

This solution works fine from OS X but if I use the iOS client, I can still connect, and PfSense shows the connection and that an IP address has been allocation to the iOS client but that's as far as it gets, the LAN is not accessible so remote desktop connection attempts fail.

I can make it work on iOS if I check the Redirect Gateway option on the OpenVPN server, then all traffic is routed over the VPN and the remote desktop works great. I don't want to send all traffic through the VPN for all clients though.

Can anyone explain why the two clients behave differently and if I can make it work better?

      Thanks!
