      2.3-BETA (amd64)
built on Fri Feb 12 03:56:01 CST 2016
      FreeBSD 10.3-BETA1

Not sure if this was possible before, but pfSense gives me error-message "Changing name on a gateway is not allowed".
In my case I have several VPN gateways with (from history) different naming conventions, so I like to change them.

Maybe the field should not be editable then.

I usually change the Gateway names with viconfig on the Console and reboot afterwards. Don't know the implications, so don't try this at home or in this case don't try it at work :)

viconfig with :%s/[old gateway name]/[new gateway name]/g and reboot should be save, right?

If the gateway name is short then it is quite likely to also appear as a "random" part of a key string in some VPN key, or…
So be careful, look and think at each place that is replaced!

As long as an interface is using that specific gateway, it wont let you change it. Go to the interface setting that is using the gateway. Select "None" in the Gateway. That will let you change the getway name and even delete it if you need to. Once you have updated the name, go back and select the gateway in the Interface setting.
