Connecting to WAN from LAN

Hi

Hope somebody might be able to send me in the right direction for this query.

I have recently moved to pfSense from IPCOP and so far am very happy but can't figure out a specific aspect - probably more down to my lack of networking knowledge but there you go!

Configuration:
internet - modem - pfSense (embedded) - LAN

I'm trying to connect to my LAN mailserver (on SMTP & IMAPS) from the LAN but through the WAN address. My email client is configured to connect through the WAN address and I can connect to the server from the internet but not when I'm on the LAN.

I have tried rules to allow from the LAN to all outbound on the required port and from LAN to WAN on the required ports. The necessary ports are also forwarded on the NAT rules.

I'm probably missing the glaringly obvious but would appreciate if someone could point this out to me.
