I was unable to find very much info on it besides this. http://www.xs4all.nl/~wpd/symon/

So this can be configured with a gui to allow me to do the items listed above?

I don't think that will work.  One item I left out is I would want to be able to fo this from a central device for multiple sites at remote locations so I would need to be able to separate the traps by site..etc  Since a BSD license solution doesn't seem likely maybe a GNU solution might work.  Would prefer a BSD license since it would attract more people here but…I need a complete and stable solution.

            Thanks ermal....

I think Nagios can do at least most things what you're looking for.
              http://www.nagios.org/
There is a freebsd port available.
You still would need some sort of webserver like apache to handle the webpages.
I think i could make it in a package, but first i'm occupied with the creation of another package.

                What about http://www.netxms.org/ ?

You will need to run the server and the agent also on PFSense.
You can have all data into a database server behind your Firewall and you will can do all management and monitoring using NetXMS console (client for Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and some other OS).

                Zillo

There are a ton of network monitoring packages that can potentially do this.  Nagios, NetXMS, Zabbix, Zenoss, Munin, etc.  Many of them look great, but don't deliver.  I've personally used Zabbix and Zenoss and been extremely disappointed with both.  I know there is a Zabbix client package for pfSense, but Zabbix currently doesn't work properly with FreeBSD in terms of monitoring, so the whole package is pointless.  I would encourage the OP to review these choices and decide what their needs are.

                    @submicron:

I agree with you… I have try many of them and specially zabbix.... They are just a pain in the *** and they wont simply deliver...
For now I use munin and monit. they are both very simple and just does what I need for now... Please do note that they are both very unsecured and I would only recommend it for home use...

Thanks for all of the replies.  It looks like using pfsense may not be the best platform for this type of solution…at least not yet.  I am going to have to look for an alternate solution.

                      Thanks,

                      Mark

What would be the essential things you would need if someone were to custom build this as a pfSense package?

After reading your post yesterday I decided to write a syslog server in PHP. Its the first one written in command line PHP that I'm aware of. I have it running as a windows service even easier to run as a service with Linux or BSD. Since I wrote portablewebap.com it can run as a windows desktop application from a CD, DVD, USB thumb driver or HDD.

A benefit for this being written in PHP is the possibility of it running from a PFSense Firewall to monitor a group of firewalls this depends on whether the PHP socket extension is available.

I just googled for PHP SNMP traps and found this which is licensed as public domain:
                          http://sourceforge.net/projects/php-netanalyzer/

Let me know if you are interested in me taking this bounty on.

                            @ mcrane

Thank you for the offer but I would need a complete solution like nagios so I could monitor all of my customers from a single location.  A paid solution is http://www.n-able.com/ or http://www.cittio.com/products/index.html  I was hoping there was a freebsd solution in place that had all the features since $400 is chump change to build a good solution.
