pfsense WAN DHCP problem
-
I am running virtualized pfsense on a Windows 10 computer, directly connected to a Motorola MB8611 modem. Comcast is the provider.
The virtual Ethernet port will pick up the DHCP for ip4 & ip6 and obtain the appropriate ip addresses. I can access the internet from the host computer through ip4 & ip6.
Pfsense will not pick up either ip4 or ip6 addresses.
The interface shows good status, and DHCP is up, but the ip address is 0.0.0.0.There's no connection through pfsense to the internet.
It's apparent to me that the virtual Ethernet port is picking up the ip addresses from Comcast through DHCP, which precludes pfsense from having them.
How do I resolve this issue?

Disable DHCP on the interface so it does not ask for an address.

Issue 2 virtual ethernet ports to the pfsense vm. Set one port to bridge mode(WAN) and the other to a LAN segment(LAN) and assign a different subnet to the lan.

Thanks for the responses, but neither work.
I moved over to virtualbox and have the same problem.
In the network connections my cable port picks up the ip address fine; I can get internet access through it.
The modem only does bridge mode, and obviously has no problem with the MAC address as the physical NIC connection connects fine.
What's not working is the pfsense or virtualbox network settings. No matter what I do all I'm getting in pfsense is 0.0.0.0 on the WAN connection.
In addition, the WAN connection always shows up, even if I have the cable disconnected, so it's obviously not connected to the physical NIC.I've run through the netgate connection troubleshooting and every setup guide I can find, but they are utterly unhelpful as they assume the networking part just works when you set it up.
What am I missing??
Do I need to be setting up a bridged connection in the windows networking list?

This is solved... Sort of.
I left the setup running for about an hour and the problem resolved itself... Pfsense now picks up the proper WAN ip address with no problem.
It's weird because I had let it all sit overnight and there was no change.
I had previously moved connections and other computers and NICs had no problem picking up the ip address through DHCP. Pfsense never could.
Go figure.
