Netgate 7100 1U HA Failover
-
hello,
I am trying to ensure what I need to do to achieve what I am looking for.
We want to ensure that if the 7100 fails it goes to the another unit. I have been going back and forth with the purchasing department and they stated I would need to purchase the expansion card to achieve HA (high availability).
is this 2 units? or how does this work? Or do I actually need to purchase the expansion card and a 2nd unit?
Not sure here.

To achieve full HA functionality you usually need the expansion card in the 7100-1U. That is because if you use the switched ports (Eth1-8) as HA interfaces they will not failover in the even of a loss of link as would be expected for a separate interface. The internal ports on the switch always remain UP. Moving those interfaces to separate NICs on the expansion card prevents that.
You can use it without the expansion card and get full HA if you only use the ix SFP+ NICs as HA interfaces.
Or you can use it with the switched ports and still see most HA functionality. It will failover fine if the node shutsdown or hangs completely for example. It just cannot failover in the event of a bad port or cable.I would definitely recommend getting the expansion card unless you can use only the two ix NICs as HA.

OH OK, is the expansion card installed into the 7100 when I order both? -
Yes, if you order the 7100 with the expansion card it will be installed when you receive it.
