I've just recently brought an old XG-2758 online that has been sitting unused for awhile. Updated it to PFSense 21.05.2 from USB and it is running happily. However I'd also like to update the firmware. The firmware update package appears to be installed by default and when I click on it, it says that the current firmware is 01.00.00.09 and the latest is 01.00.00.18.

However there's no button to click to update. It just tells me the versions, but won't actually allow me to do anything to download and update them, as the docs online describe. Am I missing something, or is there some other issue?

      Thanks.

@sycraft I just had this problem with a 7100 and resolved it today. View this thread.

That unfortunately did not work. It did put the "Upgrade and reboot" button there, but unfortunately when pushed it says:

Failed to read flash data, exiting ...
          Updating flashing ...

It then just reboots and is still on the same version.

EDIT: I should add that what I did was edit the file, not upgrade to version 22.

Do you see a log in /conf? Or have the exact error?

              @stephenw10

              /conf/netgate_firmware_upgrade.log says:

Failed to read flash data, exiting ...

So not really any more information than was in the GUI. Any other place I should be looking for more detail?

Hmm, nope looks like this is known: https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/11970

I'm looking now to see what can be done other than downgrading to 2.4.4p3.

Sounds good. However if it isn't too big an issue to downgrade and then upgrade again that can be done. It is currently live in a test environment, not production, so as long as I back up the settings it isn't a big deal if I have to mess with it.

Ok, if you're able to do that it's going to be the easiest way.
Please open a ticket with us and we can get you the recovery image to do that:

Well sadly that didn't work either. Downgrade went fine, but after install there was no firmware update package installed. Going to the package manager, it had no packages available to be installed, I'm guessing support may have been dropped since it is an older release.

I put the appliance back on PF+ 21 and reloaded the config and it is running fine again. I'd still like to update the firmware, if possible, but it isn't urgent at this point.

Hmm, I'm surprised. I expected the Netgate Coreboot Upgrade package to be installed by default there. Though it's been a while since I tested 2.4.4p3.
Testing an iso install here I was able to install that package after setting the update repo branch to 2.4.X deprecated. I would expect that to work if you're able to retry.

Ah I see what happened. I've replied to your ticket with a different firmware image.
I tested that here on a 4860 and the Coreboot Update package is there by default.

That did the trick. It happily updated to version 18 of the BIOS and I've restored it to PF+ 21 and gotten the config back on it and all is working well. I'll keep around the old image just incase but everything looks good.

                            Thanks for all your assistance.
