User error? I've seen lots of reports for different products over the years that "this thing sucks" but when questioned, turns out misconfiguration, wrong assumptions, didn't RTFM, etc.

Honestly all the talk and innuendo about seafood seems to be, shall we say, suspect?

@ppal I can assure you I have no hurt feeling.. that is for sure.

But can you clarify what your actually testing/playing with.. In your first post you stated..

Pfsense running on an old desktop with dual 1Gb NIC.

TNSR is NOT pfsense.. While there is trial software with TNSR there is no such thing in pfsense. I am confused to what your actually testing?

You post in general pfsense section saying your running pfsense, then provide feedback in TNSR (my bad for not catching that right away).. So which are having such a bad experience with?

I feel qualified in responding with my experience with actual pfsense, on quite a bit of different hardware and virtual platforms.. I have been using "pfsense" for 10+ years.. When it comes to TNSR I have pretty much zero exposure... But in general I would be inline with @mer statement about "this thing sucks" sort of posts.. And with the lack info provided on what exact hardware you running, what exact version of pfsense or tnsr your running - and how you have actually configured anything.. What I do know is TNSR is very young sort of product compared to pfsense - and its quite possible there are issues with it, especially on hardware that might not be in full compliance with HCL, etc.

But generally speaking - if what your looking for is others to jump on your "this sucks" bandwagon you prob have better luck on other forums vs the forums for pfsense users.. Like posting on a Chevy site how bad they suck ;) You get more people to agree with you say on a Ford site..

Feedback on your experience is feedback on your experience - if your having a hard time doing something or getting something to work how you feel it should work. Details are always going to be helpful, "it sucks" not so much ;)

@johnpoz This is general feedback on pfsense. I am just mucking around with it for the home. I was interested in trying out the AV.

I clicked the wrong section and have ranted and raved in the wrong section! Was NOT using TNSR.
I am aware that pfsense works flawlessly in most situations. I am going to swap the Ram to see it performs better and also try another NIC.

I have 3 NICs on the PC - I x DUAL INTEL and I x onboard. I will turn off the onboard NIC to see if that helps.

Failing that try a new desktop,

I think the NICs may be the issue, They perform slower 400 Mbps via wired connection while the same internet connection gives 800Mbps connected wireless using a GT-AC5300 Asus router.

The constant lockup and it falling after upgrades is annoying.

Well then there is no such thing as a trial, and your comments fall into line with what @mer was saying where user has not done enough research or reading of the documentation to even attempt at making a review of the product..

Where starfish and octopus some attempt at humor that went over our heads - or are they actual products, because they sure are not pfsense packages.

And what update would you have been doing to lock it up? The current download for install of pfsense is 2.5.2 - there is no update for it to perform, etc. Did you mean update of packages? Again what update - the packages do not update all that often. So on a clean install and then install of the packages would not be an "update".

So what were exactly updating? And how were you testing with eicar? squid with clam is a specific sort of setup that will scan specific sort of files, etc. Where you even moving the eicar test file through squid for it to be able to scan?

From a simple google - I found a guide on setup of squid with clamav, and that author says he was having issues with it crashing on 2.5.2, etc.. I have no recent experience with such a setup - because I have not run a proxy with pfsense in years - proxies have very little use in todays internet without some really specific wants and needs and configuration - it has almost no use today to be honest in your typical home setup.. And would not be something I would suggest some one "play" with on initial setup of pfsense to be honest.

Everything these days is ssl, and this requires setup for interception, etc. That can be a be bit complex if your not well versed in both how squid works and pfsense.

If your wanting specific help on a specific package or way to setup something specific like clamav.. I do see a redmine about clamav
              https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/11822

Not exactly sure what the status of that is - since I don't personally use it... Such questions on if its actually working/viable and ways to get it working might be better asked in the packages etc..

Need to move this thread to more appropriate section since this is not related to TNSR.

edit: OK since there is no "feedback" for normal pfsense, just moving this to the pfsense general area.

Unbelievably bad. Maybe the Netgate boxes are okay but absolute junk on a pc.

It's been running fine for me for almost 6 years. I'm currently running on the computer described in my sig, but previously ran on an old HP compact desktop computer. No issues with either.

BTW, what trial version? I've never seen one of those. Trial versions are generally for paid software, which pfsense is not. Are you sure you're running pfsense? Incidentally, I've been running the LibreOffice/OpenOffice/StarOffice package for several years and participated in the online groups. Every now and then, someone would pop up claiming they bought the software and were demanding the support they'd paid for. Turns out they'd paid someone for the software or something else entirely. Are you one of those who got suckered in that way?

                  I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

Antivirus feature running ok - stops nothing. Not even eicar. Squid clam has clammed up.

Clam AV is s**t, protect your end points.

No issues what so ever with pfSense here.

@ppal Maybe I am not a true fan boy, but I figured there were 3 options:

                        1. You needed help and asked poorly
                        2. You needed help and did not know you needed help
                        3. You like causing problems and cannot get elected to public office

None of those 3 are worth me getting upset.

@ppal I bet you're trying to run 64bits software on 32bits hardware or this is just a troll.

If you have Squid and ClamAV setup correctly it will certainly detect and block the EICAR test file. But is it worth doing so? I would argue it isn't unless you're already running Squid for some other purpose.
