What Is a Notary Public's Role?

I'm merely intrigued about this topic.

I understand this is the OffTopic section, but this seems way off topic.
 :)
Regardless, a Notary Public typically "witness the signing of documents and verifies you are who you say you are when you are signing a legal document". There are typically other services they can provide but that is the primary one.
 Example:
You go to a bank sign some paperwork for a mortgage. At some point you have to sign paper work and someone want's ID. A notary will take that ID, verify to the best of their ability that the id matches the person in front of them. If they do, the paper gets embossed with a seal that the notary signs.
Think of it as signing someones PGP key.
