SG3100 end of sale, what about software?
-
Hi all!
I bought a SG-3100 last September for my home internet connection. I am very pleased with its preformance. Today I learned that after 2 months of me owning one that the device went End of Sale and will be End of Life in 2023.
I was unable to find any info about it so... how about updates? I bought the device to be in production for at least 4-5 years.
Is there any information in regard of when the last updates will be pushed?
Thanks!

There are no plans to stop building images for the SG-3100. We still build and test for the SG-1000 and that was EoS in 2018.
There are many thousands of 3100 users relying on the device, including me.Steve

yeah same goes for my sg4860.. Its considered eol, was eos 2018-04-02, and eol 2020.. And it still working great and running current 21.05.2.. I don't think they have any plans of not providing updates for their eol models.. Until such time that current version won't run on old hardware for some reason..

Good to hear that, I was afraid that I bought the wrong model hahaha.
Thank you for the info :) -
@schuurdeur yeah just stopping support for their older models because they are "older" would really tick off a lot of their customers ;)
When there is some technical reason when older hardware can not run current version then customers less likely to get ticked off. Like when they dropped 32 bit support. They supported that way beyond when they could/should of dropped support.
Software has grown beyond say ram included in older models.. There are many technical reasons why older hardware might not run current versions of software.
The fact that older versions of pfsense are not available for download still - pisses off enough people ;) heheh If they said hey your hardware will no longer work, because we say so.. Be a real mess..
For example they were warning for really long time that going forward devices would need to support AES-NI, but then they removed that requirement.. But who knows maybe down the road that could be implemented and if your old hardware doesn't support that you wouldn't be able to run current.

I am in sim boat as you, even worse even because 3100 just went eos, while mine is actually considered EOL.. But I am not really concerned that they would just pull support for my device at this time. Couple of year down the road who knows. But I would assume your good for few years for sure. 3100 isn't eol until 2023-10-22. So you for sure would be good until then no matter what.
But I wouldn't expect them to stop producing updates until way past that, unless something happens and some new something comes into play with current versions. But even so - I doubt they would stop producing updates.. But I would assume they would make warning of some hardware requirement with new versions being planned so you should have plenty of warning..
BTW - this is just my ramblings based on experience.. I have no special insight or info on what or may not happen. They could say hey the new 22.01 doesn't run on my sg4860 for example, but I highly highly doubt that..

I mean you can always test it yourself.
But there's no need to because I'm running that here and it runs fine. As it also does on the 3100.

@stephenw10 true - I could just move to dev ver.. I was just using that as extreme example ;) hehehe

The problem with the ARM devices is that we won't be able to install CE version.
So, end of the road when Netgate says it won't be updating FE version for this device anymore..If it was a x86 device like sg-5100 for an example, we would be able to install CE version on it..

Nice news, the SG-3100 is a very good home device.
And yes, the 22.01 Dev runs very solid and nice on it. Looks like a very nice Release Version is incoming...
