I did prior research and verified others who have used this NIC before using it. Including someone who used it with the Lenovo Thinkpad T420.

Setting up pfsense for the first time. I just downloaded the release img, put it on a USB and booted and installed. I have a brand new SSD and express card NIC. When it boots up, the card is not detected and not found in dmesg (grep bge)

If I boot up with it unplugged and then plug it in, I see:

bge0: <Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller, ASIC rev. 0x57766001> at device 0.0 on pci3
      bge0: CHIP ID 0x57766001; ASIC REV 0x57766; CHIP REV 0x577660; PCI-E
      bge0: PHY read timed out (phy1, reg1, val 0xffffff)
      bge0: Try again
      bge0: PHY write timed out (phy1, reg0, val 0x8000)
      bge0: PHY read timed out (phy1, reg1, val 0xffffff)
      bge0: Try again
      bge0: PHY write timed out (phy1, reg0, val 0x8000)
      bge0: PHY read timed out (phy1, reg1, val 0xffffff)
      bge0: Try again
      bge0: PHY write timed out (phy1, reg0, val 0x8000)
      bge0: PHY read timed out (phy1, reg1, val 0xffffff)
      bge0: Try again
      bge0: PHY write timed out (phy1, reg0, val 0x8000)
      bge0: PHY read timed out (phy1, reg1, val 0xffffff)
      bge0: attaching PHYs failed
      device_attach: bge0 attach returned 6

      Otherwise, nothing

I saw the install manual listed some things to add to /boot/loader.conf.local but it does not seem to make any difference.

I've tried both the release and beta.

Any ideas from fellow Lenovo T420 owners?

ok I figured it out. I needed to switch the bios from UEFI to Legacy
