Replacing failed router, how to restore config?
-
My current router running pfSense 2.5.2 died about a week ago and I am looking to replace it. I had configured the "auto config backup" package and have the password for it, but how can I access these config backups so I could grab one and restore it onto the replacement router? Am I able to do this? Or would I need the machine id to do so? I don't know that I saved my config.xml file anywhere accessible to me. Is there any way for me to find my auto config backup and get the most recent file?

I assume you have read the official documentation here: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/autoconfigbackup.html? According to that page, you MUST remember the password you configured along with the Device Key when Auto Config Backup was enabled. There are two orange-highlighted warnings on the docs page about recording the password and device key offline separate from the firewall file system.

The normal thing to do is download the config file to your computer. I do this whenever I make significant changes. Failing that, can you at least read from the disk to copy the config file?

If you did not note the Device Key we can attempt to locate it if you have the NDI or the hint / identifier you set in ACB. Steve

@stephenw10 I don't recall if I set an NDI/Hint. If I did, I would probably have said something like "nooblink" in it. I don't know why, but I saved the password, but not the device Id. It was a doofus move and I must have missed the big warning on the page saying to save the device id. Ugh.

Not seeing anything for just that.

@stephenw10 I can provide the IP address it would have come from if that helps.

I can try. It's not normally something I can access though. Is the hardware completely dead? No way to install pfSense again to get the NDI?

@stephenw10 sent you the IP address in a PM/chat. Thank you for trying this.
