Android phone tethering

Hi all,

Just checking if the instructions in this thread are still accurate?:

I've been trying to get an Android phone tethered to my pfsense box for a backup internet connection (internet is currently down).

pfsense can see the device as soon as I plug it in and enable USB tethering. I then create a new OPT device, set that device to use ue0, set it to DHCP for IPv4, and then set it as the primary gateway for IPv4.

The OPT interface is assigned a local IP via the phone. Would this be the reason it isn't working?

A RFC1918 IP is not a problem.
My ISP router assigns my pfSense WAN as 192.168.1.3 - gateway 192.168.1.1 (the ISP box LAN interface).

edit : if the LAN and WAN have the same network, then that would be an issue of course.

You might also get an IPv6 address, as IPv6 is a mandatory part of 4G & later. However, this depends on your carrier. Mine, Rogers, does it properly and tethered devices get an address. Another company (work phone) does a lousy job. However, since the phone doesn't provide prefix delegation, pfsense can't pass IPv6 on to the LAN.
