Create Reservation without IP to Link MAC and Hostname
-
I am trying to create static DHCP reservations that only have MAC address and the hostname I want them to have. this way they will still use DHCP to pull IPv4 and IPv6 addresses via DHCP while assigning them hostnames via the DHCP server. My issue is that even once the DHCP reservation is created with the information is doesn't link, it will still create its own entry in the DHCP table with the name the device is declaring. Is there a way around this?

Definition of DHCP:
"Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway."
DHCP allocates IP addresses by design. If I understand what you're asking, you can't have a DHCP server which simply binds the hostname to the MAC address. The hostname must resolve to an IP in order for networking on the DHCP guest to function.
However, you can assign a static reservation (IP) via DHCP to a specific host and then create a DNS entry (A-Record) which maps the hostname to that same IP.
