Restoring a back up XML with all data (excl RDD) should not take as long as it does - with zero UI guesses when it's completed
-
I've have the lovely pleasure to piss away 2 weekends now because there is no clear way to restore a config.xml during the fresh install.
Why not make it more apparent that it's running updates and downloading and in general-working which is already the hardest thing to accomplish, doesn't matter how many different variants of the same hardware XML working pack ups that were active and working at one point in time.
Package reinstall issues is the least if it. There needs to be a overhaul of the web console GUI for backups. It's extremely lacking. And it makes it difficult when restoring you find out it suddenly doesn't work on the same exact hardware (???????)

There are several ways to restore a config during the install if you need to do that:
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/restore-during-install.htmlBut if you can always restore from the gui after installing. If the hardware is identical it should just reboot into the the restored config. If there are interface differences it should ask you to re-assign them at the gui before rebooting.
Can you give us any further details of how it failed for you?

@stephenw10 yes I made sure the interface assignments were correct after the completed bootup process, (the one time I had it working) and the original config restored, with web gui accessable, then I tried to restore a different module and that's where I am at square 1

then I tried to restore a different module
A different module? Like a config section? A package?
Restoring sections of a config is not recommended. Only the main section contains the config version so if you restore a config section from an older config it will not be updated to work with the the current pfSense version.

@stephenw10 Not very helpful, the lack of support from netgate is extremely lack luster, I even bought the pfsense plus subscription when I got my dual NIC 11th Gen 2.5GB Intel NUC
I was stuck without internet for a week straight because the crappy GUI command line is hit o9r miss, I mean why cant you have a UI to show the user how far its going on and progressed, instead of just running behind the scenes wondering if its frozen or if I wasted the past 20 minutes trying to fgigure out if this restore worked, absolute trash. I have various different types of backups in nature ones with RDD data, without, and extra, I can't beileve you cant even make an op0tion to "reestore from USB" consoled into the VGA version.
I BASIC FUNCTION LIKE THAT INSTEAD OF TRYING TO HARDWIRE AND GET THE THE WEB CONFIGURATOR ONLY TO REALIZE OH SHIT ITS NOT WORKING OR LOADING ANYTHING AT ALL BECAUSE PHP IS messed up as well. Thats just one example

I'm sorry you had such a hard time with this.
I'm still not completely sure what you tried to do here and what happened.
Restoring a config in the webgui, actually uploading it and converting it to the current config version, should be near instantaneous.
Once that's done it will ask you to reassign the interfaces if there is a mismatch and then reboot into the new config.
I assume that did not happen when you tried it though.I can't see any support tickets from the email address you used here but if you have a support subscription and didn't receive the expected level of support I would very much like to review that if you have a ticket number.
