I originally had 2.5.2 UFS installed with the issue of multiple /tmp directories, etc. showing.

Running the 2.6.0 upgrade. Everything run smoothly and system came up without intervention.

Interestingly, the disk now shows as being ZFS. How is that possible?

If just doing an update , and not a reinstall via USB.
        I'd say it shouldn't be ...

@gwaitsi Can you provide a screen shot showing it is ZFS?

also the output to the command more /etc/fstab from the Command Prompt page (Diagnostics->Command Prompt)

@gwaitsi I wonder if you installed to ZFS when you installed the previous version?

ZFS was an option, but not the default one, on earlier versions of CE.
Reason being there's no way to upgrade UFS to ZFS

@rcoleman-netgate this system was upgraded from 2.4x to 2.5.0, then 2.5.1 and then switched to 2.60dev and back to 2.5.2. unless something happened in that process. but when i went from 2.60dev back to 2.5.2 i had duplicate directories in the dashboard. oh well, everything seems to be working.

@gwaitsi You can't downgrade from a dev branch to a release so I suspect you reformatted it for ZFS at that time.

Yeah, there's no way to switch filesystems at upgrade. You can only do that by reformatting at install. So it must have been running ZFS already.
I think the bug you are referring to is this: https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/12144
That only applied to ZFS installs,

                      Steve
