@mcury Yeah, it seems like a nice “compromise” box between the SG-2100 and SG-6100. I would have preferred it was ARM based though because of lower power consumption and (depending on SoC) higher performance.

Love the no fuss of using the official appliances :-)

          @keyser hm, nice point.
Do you know the power consumption of this new SG-4100?
          Can't find this info anywhere

No, but I would venture a guess in the 9-10w range for “close to idle” with two interfaces connected (1Gbe WAN, 2.5Gbe LAN).

A similar ARM based box could probably hit the 5w marker in a similar situation, but have better performance (And consume a lot less power under full load)

hm... I have a SG-3100 and I really like it.. But if I was in a better situation, I would get a SG-4100...

And what did you think about the price 599,00 ?

Well personally I think it’s a great price considering that pfSense+ is included and you are supporting/donating to the project by buying official appliances.
Yes, it is a couple of 100 USD more than similar cheap 3rd party hardware where you can install pfSense CE and have a similar setup.
But pfSense need supporters to continue development, and pfSense+ does come with a few added bonusses. I think its a sweet solution at this price and a much better way for me to donate to the project.

Regarding ARM vs. X86: The Atom is nice little proc for this kind of appliance and it does feature perfect compatibility. But seeing how well ARM has done in the SG-1100/2100 I would love if they dipped their toes a little deeper and offered SG appliances with much higher performing 4 cores SoCs - or better yet, 8 core hybrid SoCs. These days you can get a ARM soc with small XEON like performance and features running at 1/4 the power consumption.

Love the no fuss of using the official appliances :-)

The test device I have shows 11W at the wall on a kill-a-watt style meter. Uncalibrated.
That's with an SFP WAN and 2x 2.5G LAN interfaces connected at close to idle.

I bought a couple of 7100s for branch offices because they were rack mountable, but they were quite a bit more expensive than the 6100 (or 4100) and the performance specs over the 6100 weren't all that much. I see this mentions it's rack mountable, but I only see a wall mount kit available. How does the rack mounting work for this and is it the same for the 6100?

The rack mount is still in development, hard to put a date on it with global supply chains being what they are.
It will mount the unit rear facing for access to the ports with an extension for the USB ports.

@stephenw10 Are they the same size as the SG-6100 ?

These might work if they are:-

Yes the 4100 is the same dimensions as the 6100.

Fair enough but people have been asking for ages and there has been no action from Netgate re rack mounting the devices.

The OEM even lists a rack mount kit.

Hi Steve, how does the 4100 power consumption compare to the 6100 power consumption? Same form factor same processor, same figures for idle operation?

Also, the 4100 seeming so similar to the 6100, can we, potential buyers, be reasonably certain that the teething problems of this new line of appliances -- in close harmony with the also quite new 22.x pfSense+ software -- have already been solved?

                                  Thanks,
                                  Pete

The 10G PHYs can use a Watt or two with SFP+ modules in. The one I have here is using ~15W on the same meter but it's 'fully loaded'.

Yes, it's very similar to the 6100 so most of the issues had already been solved. The sort of things we saw in development were due to the differences, like the omission of the first two ix NICs from the SoC.
