      #rm /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf
      #pkg-static upgrade -f

I get (among lots of log lines) :

      pkg-static: POST-INSTALL script failed

Creating user 'openvpn' with uid '301'.
pw: group `301' does not exist
      pkg-static: PRE-INSTALL script failed

And I'm back at the shell prompt.

Back on the dashboard : still "Version 2.6.0 is available."

      Any idea ?

I had to reinstall pfSense and restore config -> now it's OK

Another point (I shall open a new thread) : unbound seems unstable (had to restart service to get DNS resolution)

            I had the simliar problem.
After upgrade the system hung in the single user mode and after a reboot the system showed 2.6.0 as acutal version and also a new version is available.

For me a pkg update ; pkg upgrade + reboot helped.

Very said that the upgrade still not run smoothly and without interactions. - In the history about each second upgrade gave troubles, problems and failures. Not have the feeling there is any quality control.

              I managed to fix it.
It seems that the installation script expects a group "openvpn" to be present with GID 301. But because I previously added users to my OpenVPN server, the "openvpn" group already exists with a different GID.
              To fix it:

              • log in to your pfSense over SSH or local console
              • open shell (option 8)
              • cat /etc/group to list the contents of the group file
              • check if you have a group named openvpn (first column - columns are separated by :)
              • if yes, use a text editor to change its GID (third column) to 301
                • you will need to check the /etc/passwd file to change any references to the old GID. In /etc/passwd it's the 4th column that has the GID of the user
              • if not, use a text editor to add this line at the end: openvpn:*:301:
              • Re-run pkg upgrade and see if you get any errors this time.

I'm not an expert, just describing what worked for me 🙂

@jackmax This fix worked for my upgrade from 22.01 -> 22.05 as I am running OpenVPN as well. Hopefully this gets some more visibility!

I was hit with this during an upgrade to 22.05, where openvpn was not working, and figured out that I had the same issue.

First I had a crash during upgrade:

Then I found this thread https://forum.netgate.com/topic/172693/22-05-dco-and-openvpn-problems/3 and tried this:

pkg update -f; pkg upgrade -y

To get an error that the install could not add the group openvpn because it already existed.

I created the group via pfsense web interface like 10 years ago when I first setup the VPN server. I actually just deleted it from pfsense using the web interface, and re ran pkg update -f; pkg upgrade -y and rebooted.
