Lightweight/low cost hardware for pfsense
-
Hi all,
Long time user and advocate of pfsense in the office.I need to replace my home router. It doesn't do much other than act as a modem for my DSL connection (a fairly standard for the UK 80/20Mb connection from BT), and do firewall duties. Wireless is handled by a WAP.
So I really just need a low maintenance and low cost box I can stick in the attic and mainly ignore.
Any recommendations on something available in the UK (or from Ali Express)?
thanks

Our own 1100 will handle that easily. Or the 2100 if you need more RAM to run packages.
Both are available from us direct or from Amica in the UK.Neither include a VDSL modem though, you will need an external device.

Nothing lower cost than virtualization IMO.

@provels While generally true, this is my home network and I'm not running any computers 24/7 or VM host. Hence just wanting a small low power drain box.

Ok for sure but what is then wrong with the Netgeate 1100?
A small APU4D4 is also in that price range or a small Qoton
fanless PC for arround ~200 $ -

Thanks, but I really wanted something that didn't need another "box" ie. modem -

... then you can only use a "commercial" Router - you wont find a Box WITH included Modem that can be used with pfsense (IMHO)

@fireodo I suspect I'll end up with an ebay draytek box and in future virtualise!

Yeah, it's possible to get a VDSL PCUe card style modem but really it's just an external modem on a card. And you need a full sized box to put it in. Not worth it IMO.
The HG612 modem does the job an costs peanuts.Steve

I was mislead by the entire topic, sorry for that. With more money and knowledge if the BT in UK supports
this modems (named and linked below) you could be happy, but not matching your price.- Netgate 2100 + ADSL/VDSL SFP modem
- VT AIR 100 Firewall + ADSL/VDSL SFP modem
