Proper setup for getting wan ip on new hardware
-
Hi all.
I have a Netgate SG-3100 but it's been spotty so I want to replace with Dell Optiplex. I get service from Comcast with their cable modem/router and have a static ip address. I copied the wan settings to the Optiplex. I spoofed the mac address. Everything appears to be fine but I'm not getting internet. I think the modem/router has to bridge to the Optiplex. I saw an option for this in the Comcast modem/router settings but it's not currently bridged. Do I need to call Comcast up to get it bridged to a new Pfsense appliance?

Was it bridged to the 3100 previously? Nothing should need to be changed from the previous setup if you spoofed the MAC.

@stephenw10 I'm honestly not sure. I took over the setup from a previous company. I assume that it needs to be bridged since it's a static ip. The modem/router is an XB3.
I was wondering if there is a guide to starting from scratch on this process that anybody could recommend?

Do you have the existing setup still in place to check?

@stephenw10 I had to end up just using the modem/router for now at the location. I would prefer to start from scratch. I don't use anything other than a basic lan so it's more about inputting the correct settings for the wan portion of the Pfsense setup. I need to know if I need to contact Comcast to bridge the modem.

Probably only comcast can answer that for sure. If you're able to though I would just try it. They probably still pass the static lease via DHCP so I would leave the pfSense WAN configured for DHCP, set bridge mode in the modem and see what happens.

@stephenw10 What was interesting is when I logged into the Comcast modem it wasn't bridged in the settings. Someone mentioned it was something that needed to be done from Comcast end. Does that make sense?
-
Well if it's not possible from the modem interface then they would have to do it. Have you tried enabling it?

@stephenw10 I did at the time. It didn't make any difference. From what I understand it's not a true bridge and Comcast will have to bridge. I guess I will need to call them. I just wanted to make sure I had all the info I needed before I did.
