Right now we are using pfsense on a custom build 1u machine with a p4 cpu and sata disk.

It's working perfectly and we have no performance problems at all.

The only main issue is that I have no fail over or raid configured. This is considerd to be the most important server in our network now and I run it on cheap hardware with no redundancy..

The current server uses 1 sata disk, if this would stop working, my network would be down..including our client servers..

So I would like to invest in a new dell server poweredge R200 Quadcore intel server with RAID 1, which is in waranty and has raid.

I can live with the fact that freebsd or pfsense does not support the quad core cpu's (4 cores) and use only 1 (still fast enough), but does pfsense work with 2x SAS hdisks configured in raid 1 with a SAS 6ir raid controller from dell.

Anybody have any experience with new dell hardware and pfsense? The main problem right now is that I don't want my firewall running on cheap hardware with no redundancy..

Our clients pay a good amount of money for uptime.. the least I can do is run our firewall on something which I can trust to stay running for the next year 24/7.

Anybody using pfsense in a corporate network and using recent hardware? Preferbly dell servers (1U) with dell controllers or raid?

Is a carp cluster out of the question?  This would give you redundancy on all parts of the system, not just the hard drives?  Maybe you can use the old server and the new one together for this…

Your SAS 6ir chip will not be recognized with FreeBSD 6.2 (i.e. pfSense 1.2_release)  You'll need to try one of the recent builds of 1.2 (still release) built on FreeBSD 6.3.  It might work, I only tried 6.2 on our PowerEdge 1950iii to no avail before making it our voip server.  We use an old 1750 right now for pfSense, single disk, no redundancy.

That is not correct.  pfSense and FreeBSD are definitely SMP aware and have no problem supporting and running on machines with multiple cpu's/cores.  pfsense will work fine on the Sas raid controller, but I prefer the Perc raid cards.  You will have to use a release version of 1.2 that is built on FreeBSD 6.3 as mentioned in this thread.

          Good luck and enjoy!
