      Hello all,

Looking for some guidance. Was trying to watch Disney+ HD video and it kept stalling and buffering every 30 to 90 seconds. Tried completely rebooting my Sony TV, no improvement.

Rebooted my Netgate appliance with pfSense CE and boom, no more stalling and buffering the rest of the evening. The hardware had not been rebooted for probably 6 months or longer.

Any ideas of what I should look at to determine why this was happening?

      The hardware is:
      Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU C2358 @ 1.74GHz
      2 CPUs: 1 package(s) x 2 core(s)
      AES-NI CPU Crypto: Yes (active)
      QAT Crypto: Yes (inactive)

      Packages:
      apcupsd

      Configuration:
      Nothing special, all inbound blocked.
      All outbound allowed.
4 hardware networks with a few rules about interconnection.
Memory usage 6% of 4 GB
      State table size 0%
      MBUF usage 2%
      Load average 0.14, 0.12, 0.08.
      CPU usage 4% - 9%
      SWAP usage 0%.
Disk usage 1% of 100 GB.
      /var/run 3% of 3.4 MB
      No interface errors.

Edited to add that the ISP is Comcast Xfinity.

        No other packages running?

Nothing in the system logs? The WAN interface reconnecting for example?

Check the Status > Monitoring graphs covering the period this was happening. Is there packet loss? Memory exhaustion?

@stephenw10 Status -> System Logs -> System -> Gateways is empty.

Ok, well something was using significant CPU just recently. When on that graph did you see the issues? Just before the reboot?

Nothing in the main system log?

@stephenw10 Yes just before the reboot. The main system log starts at the boot. I did not look prior to rebooting the device.

Mmm, well I suggest next time it happens look at the process list and system logs at the time. Something is having to work hard there.

@stephenw10 That will depend on if it happens when the wife is expecting to watch a movie, but I get your point and would have if not for a certain amount of angst.

Ah, yes, sometimes it's better to just reboot. 😉

But at some point getting more data is the only way forward really. Is there a reason you're not running 2.6?

@stephenw10 I found in the last 10 years of using pfSense that being an early adopter is not wise. My experience with upgrades has not been good, often retreating to the command line and a reinstall even though I am on a Netgate Appliance.

Ok so I upgraded from 2.5.x to 2.6.0 using the ui this time, and it worked. Pleasantly surprised. I hope this is the future as I had given up on using pfSense. We'll see how the next few upgrade go.
