I have been trying to figure out for a while why a particular install i have in the filed is just…sluggish.

Long story short, as I was sitting here staring at the screen, it jumped out at me - i386.

I would never have installed that intentionally, but in the haste of the deployment I must have grabbed the wrong file.

And, unfortunately, it's bare metal, with a single internet connection.

I've since been installing under vsphere - if that were the case here, I could fix it in 5 minutes.

Is there any relatively safe way to upgrade 2.6 i386 to 2.6 amd64 remotely?

Assuming a safe reinstall remotely is not possible, is there anything I can tweak to improve performance/stability until I have someone onsite?

Or should I leave it alone and hope for the best.

There is no safe/supported way to change architectures in place.  On 2.2.x and before it could be fudged slightly but still dangerous. The safest way – and the only officially recommended way -- is a reinstall.

As for the speed, it may or may not be related to that. Without more info, it's tough to say. We'd need to see info about the RAM usage, CPU usage, packages installed, etc, etc.
