Netgate 1100 intermittent no Internet
-
I've been using my Netgate 1100 router for a year and a half now. I lose Internet periodically and usually thought it was my provider until today. When I called up my provider, they said there weren't any outages, and when I connected a laptop directly to the modem, I did get Internet. So, the problem exists with my router.
I had the same trouble when originally setting up my router: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/160348/new-sg-1100-no-internet/5 I thought it was just taking its time to initially connect to the modem. However, today I lost Internet all morning. When I plugged in an old router I was able to get Internet. When I switched back to my Netgate 1100, I did finally get Internet again.
Questions:
- Are there known related intermittent issues? It doesn't appear to be rebooting which I understand is one common issue.
- Is the Netgate 2100 any more robust?
- If I do upgrade, can I just copy my settings from the 1100 to the 2100? I normally use a router based VPN and it took me a few days to figure out how to set up the VPN. I don't really want to go through all that again.

No there are no known issues that present like that.
Yes the 2100 is superior in a number of ways. It has 2 NICs. You can connect using a switched or non-switched port which can work past some issues.
You can import the config but the different physical interfaces mean it requires some changes. However we can make those changes for you to allow it to import directly.
If it happens again try to find out exactly what has failed. Is it still connected to the ISP but just not passing traffic for example?

Thanks Steve,I'll look into it next time it happens. All I know is that I was able to log into the router over the
LAN using a browser window. If I recall correctly, the Gateways were "pending", but I cannot be certain of that at this point. My Internet provider was able to see that I had a connection and could see nothing wrong at their end.

One more question: Would having 2 NIC allow me to run two networks, one with a VPN and a second without?

You can do that but you don't need 2 NICs to do it. The 1100 can do that using the LAN and OPT ports. Or using VLANs on the LAN port with an external managed switch.
