Upgrade 2.2 –> 2.3 from config

Hi, I have a nanoBSD card with pfsense v 2.2.5. I would upgrade this system to 2.3.x and even to an SSD hardware. Could I save the config (2.2.5), install 2.3.x full version on SSD and restore the 2.2.5 version config file? Or this isn't safe? so I need to: upgrade 2.2.5 to 2.3 THEN save the config file and install new pfsense on SSD. Thx for your suggestion!
