netgate sg-1100 no packages available

out of the box unit. Configuration seemed to go ok. It's wired up and working but I'm not able to retrieve a list of packages using the web. I've tried to do an update from the web interface and it says it's up to date and from the command line I've tried pkg update -f and I get:

"Unable to retrieve package information."
