Only getting 5% LAN network speed on Ookla from both LAN's

Only getting 5% LAN network speed on Ookla from both LAN's

I tried speedtest-cli on the WAN and getting 975 Mbit/s down and 963 Mbit/s Up

When I try from each LAN (Ookla Speed Test) I get 45.05 Mbps Down and 42.67 Mbps Up

This is a new fresh install. (I had 2.6.0, then I re-installed with 2.5.2 with same results)

My other pfSense router gets same speed on WAN and LAN.

This pfsense is a HP Laptop using the onboard NIC as the WAN and using TP-Link USB to Ethernet Adapter (UE300) plugged in on both USB 3.0 ports on both LANs.

*** I tried checked Disable hardware checksum offload

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thank You

These are likely all the reasons this is happening. USB NICs are notoriously poor performing and onboard NICs on laptops aren't generally superb, either.

I understand they might not be the best, but 5% across the board?

There has to be more to it. I seen many posts that say they use USB NIC and working good.

I don't mean to critique as you are trying to help me, but I believe there has to be something more to it...

          Just asking

@frankyd3325 to rule out the usb, if you say you get full speed using the built in nic and speedtest-cli

Try using the usb as wan and running the same test.

If possible try using the usb nics on another piece of hardware and doing say an iperf test with different os, windows or linux.

I think I might even have that same usb nic in my tool bag.. If I get a chance tmrw I will test in one of my systems to something local via iperf with another OS.

Using some usb 2.5ge nics I am seeing 2.37Gbps between them. So its not like usb nics can't work at wire speed..

            $ iperf3.exe -c 192.168.10.10

That is via 2 usb nics between a pc running windows and my synology nas.

That is usb is using RTL8153 chipset, freebsd and therefore pfsense doesn't always have a great track record with using realtek based nics anyway.

Yup, some USB NICs can be truly terrible!

Try running an iperf test from pfSense to a client on LAN directly. See if performance there is still bad.

Try re-assigning the NICs so the LAN is the on-board NIC (what NIC is that?) instead and repeat that test.

                Wait ...
Using an USB NIC, using realtek hardware, and one of the NICs on the pfSense (FreeBSD) side ?? I'm impressed.
Should I reconsider my thoughts about USB as a NIC, and even realtek ?

                edit - I've read again :

realtek USB NIC ok, but no FreeBSD ...

@gertjan yeah no freebsd involved in my testing..

Mmm, there are some USB adapters that will do 2.5G under FreeBSD but.... don't expect that! 😉
