open VPN working,,,Now how do i get my files?
-
Thanks I'll check it out.
-
Yup, I'll second VLC. It plays everything and is massively configurable.
-
I recommend 3.0.17.4 VLC (admin: removed) version. It is the most stable among all the beta versions they provide.
-
Um, that site that was linked looks sketchy as hell! Just get it from the Google Play store, where it's free.
-
VLC for media and FX file explorer for other files. This is working well. I was using my phone network at home but I think because it comes from an extender connected to my network it wasn't working well. I tried these at work and they worked great. Thanks!

@stephenw10 exactly the vlc site has android version right on their site.

I don't get why if you have more than a handful of media files wouldn't just setup server for that - plex, jellyfin, emby, etc. Now your files are presents and easy to find what your looking for, lots of info about the movie/tv show, etc.
Been a plex user for many a year, would never go back to combing throw a directory of files ;)
-
Johnny I've been using Plex also. I have it on the Nvidia Shield. The Plex grabs my pi nas files. The problem is that they always update the server apps and then there becomes an issue with grabbing the files.
I like Plex too but if I'm on vacation somewhere and the play store decides to update Plex while I'm away, it screws me up. I just want another way to get my files. -
@edwardnizz not sure why an update to the plex client on your device would cause a problem - while I don't have any android devices that I use, many of my users have them.
I have never heard of any complaints from any of them, and I update my my clients on iphone, tablet, roku all the time - don't recall every having any issues after an update.
Also just don't update while your on vacation that app if your thinking there could be a problem ;)
Ah - Your saying your shield auto updates while your away and breaks your access? Can you not turn off auto updates? Simple google shows lots of info how to turn them off.
I have a shield, but don't use it on a regular basis and only as a client - but if get a chance today will take a look at turning off any auto update settings.
But sure a out of band method to accomplish something is never a bad idea ;) So alternative access to your media if your plex isn't working - good idea!
-
@johnpoz look what ever I'm just telling you what happened more than once to me where the Plex server was dead at work or wherever. And I come home and go through all the motions and it winds up being the app needs to be updated. I know to turn off Google play. Anyways I was asking about an alternative to Plex, so what does that matter. Why the negativity? I'm just telling my experience. This is a help forum right?
-
@edwardnizz not sure why you took what I wanted to be helpful advice as negative.
As I said at the end of my last post nothing wrong with an alternative if something fails. And that is a good idea to always have a backup plan.
But clearly you have some underlying issue if an update or failure to update breaks your plex.. I have been running plex for many many a year.. Have never had such an issue ever..
I have ran it on multiple platforms.. I don't use shield as my plex server - if your having such issues with it - maybe its the problem, and vs looking for ways to work around something that fails you, maybe time to replace it with something more stable.. That is helpful advice in my opinion.. Sorry if you didn't take it or this that way.
If it fails so often that you have gone out of your way to find an alternative way, and wasn't just a preemptive move "incase" it happens. Tells me that system is just broken.
If you have a car that fails to start when you need it, do you buy a second beater car to use when that one doesn't start - or do you fix the car or find a replacement ;)
-
If I pay 175 to 200 Dollars for something, I'm not going to just replace it. I see you pop in on all these questions and to be honest. You come off very rude. I've been on an off these forums for years. Maybe you have money to throw away. I don't.
-
@edwardnizz What version of shield software are you on, I do recall there was all kinds of complaints when 9.0 dropped, I believe they came out with a hotfix soon after that.
I believe 9.1 is current..
Quick google finds this which is only couple of months old
https://androidpctv.com/nvidia-shield-experience-91/
NVIDIA Shield Experience 9.1, update which fixes for PLEX.Since you didn't actually bring up the reason for wanting this other method to play your files over a vpn, I have no idea maybe you spent many hours researching fix to the actual problem.. Or maybe you haven't?
Not sure why people take honest advice to get to the root of the problem the wrong way, if you don't just answer their question your being rude.. This is a community board, with lots of people wanting to help.. But more often then not it's a xy problem anyway. Which this seems to be - your actual problem is not that you need to access media files directly over a vpn. Your actual problem seems to me that your plex is unstable and causing you issue when it crashes, if it was stable would you really need to file browser over your vpn and play your media files via a player?
But hey I tried, sorry you took it the wrong way..

Once again, what advice are you giving? The other gentlemen on here made a suggestion It solved my problem. There was no reason for you to chime in, I was happy. It's like your accusing my of lying about the updating issues when you don't even have a shield to test.
I truly apologize to everyone else in this thread. Didn't mean to make this much drama. -
@edwardnizz said in open VPN working,,,Now how do i get my files?:
like your accusing my of lying about the updating issues when you don't even have a shield to test.
Lying? I asked you what version of the shield software your running? I do have a shield I could use to test. I just don't use it as my PMS, only as a client.
And acknowledged there clearly some known issues with plex on shield depending on what version you were on..
Glad your happy with the answer you got, my bad for trying to assist.. I will not make that mistake again on any of your other future threads rest assured.
There was no reason for you to chime in
My first comment in this thread was to Steve, about the fishy link. And made a off hand comment that I would use something other then direct access to files to view my video. You engaged me.. But anyway, glad your happy with the solution you found.
