It uses netmap(4) which requires device support:
https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=netmap#SUPPORTED_DEVICESThat does include re(4) but actual support can be variable. The Intel drivers are generally better and more likely to work as expected. So, no, any Intel based NIC would be expected to work there AFAIK.

How did it fail? At the mountroot prompt? What that after upgrading or a clean install?
I haven't seen that on any of the 2.7 test boxes I have. Yet.

Ah, could be UFS.... Hmm. Testing....

Re: realtek-re-kmod missing in pfSense 2.6 repository?
Bit off topic but can pfsense be upgraded to 2.7 dev temporarily then “downgraded” to 2.7 release when it comes out? There’s been times I want to try the dev releases but I don’t want to get stuck in that path.
-
Hmm, nope ufs systems updated fine here too. I'll see if any of the devs have seen it.

Yes. When a release comes out you can simply switch to stable and upgrade to it from an earlier snapshot.
What you can't do is 'downgrade' to 2.6 once you've gone to a 2.7 snapshot.Steve

There are several ways

I forgot I’m on PfSense +, what’s the equal to 2.7, 22.09?
-
It's the current dev version which is 22.11. Plus snapshots are not available yet though, we have a few bugs to iron out first. Should be imminent.

Yes, that is what happens because the FreeBSD ABI version is different. However when you switch back to 2.7 it should change back to 14.
You should see the repo pkg upgrade or downgrade in the logs when you do.However I can't replicate that currently. In fact there seems to b exactly the opposite problem; the stable ABI is not updated to 12 so i cannot update from it. Looking at that now.

Please keep this thread on topic. People click this topic specifically for realtek issues caused by years of neglect. Realtek hardware exists and works fine mostly everywhere...we just need to do manual foo to fix it here.
Normally I'm not one to complain, but we're talking about upgrades, downgrades, and complaints about posts being spam...

I can confirm that netmap is not working correctly with these drivers in pfSense, so do not try to use the inline mode for suricata or snort. It will crash shortly after setting applied or after reboot.
P.S.
I've tried builds based on Freebsd 12 only and at least 3 different realtek cards, if you have any luck with other version or hardware, please let us know. -
@w0w for the record I had the same issue with inline & legacy, made no difference.
-
@mxczxakm for the record, I have crash and kernel dump on all three variants and your problem looks different for me. Create a new topic and post there as much information as you can.
