In reading the Netgate 7100 documentation, it states that wired SFP+ units won't work (only fiber). Is there an expansion card that can be used to connect to a 5GB ethernet uplink (AT&T in my area is offering 5GB to the home!)

      Thanks,

        Greg

        Like 5Gbase-T directly?

There are some threads about using X5xx or X7xx NICs successfully in pfSense but I'm not sure any have been tested in the 7100.

@ggilley Any luck with this? I am looking at doing the same.

I haven't seen anything confirming it directly but I would expect to be able to use an X700 base T NIC in the 7100. And if that NIC supports 5GbE it would support it there.
I have no way to test that myself currently.

@richb8 I ended up buying one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075Q5C3Z4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

At the time, there weren't any of the cards available.

I was just about to recommend an older UniFi switch to use as a media converter. This is one of reasons I went with a 6100 with a rack mount kit as opposed to getting the 7100. I have the same AT&T Fiber service at 2 gig, so I chose the 6100 only because of the 2.5Gb ethernet ports.

@ggilley FWIW, I've used the QNAP QSW-308-1C with the unified RJ45/SFP+. That worked, and so did the Planet Technologies XT-705A.

I've also tried the UniFi Flex XG, and that didn't work. For some reason the ATT router didn't want to passthrough or assign an IP, but I could manually assign an address on the subnet (vs passthrough).

The other thing to be mindful of, performance compared to the on-router speedtest. The HUMAX router seems to lose about 300Mbps, and then the media converters may lose a bit too.

Follow up with what kind of performance you get. I've noticed all sorts of variations with different equipment. It's hard to say what's best, even though they all sync on the AT&T side.
