I’m sorry to ask. How do you update to a CE snapshot while the NIC is not functional? By USB, is there a compact procedure somewhere?

Thinking about buying the new 226 NIC for my router.

If you were installing version 2.6 CE with ZFS
you could try out to upgrade to 2.7 Devel, if
not or if hardware will be not fully compatible
supported either part wise or fully, like in your
case I would also tending to install fresh like

An 2.7 devel image on USB stick would be best matching.

• Make a Backup of the System settings
• Make a Backup of the entire system
• Serial console cable in place
• Download the image
• Download Balena Etcher
• Prepare the USB Stick
• Install pfSense using the USB Stick

Currently running a Intel NUC7i3BNK with this NIC Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V.

I was thinking of installing the nightly 2.7, boot it with I226-V support. And then upgrade to pfSense plus 22.05 where the driver is also embedded. Then restoring the config when back on 22.05 the same as my current router.

You can't upgrade from 2.7 to 22.05 because technically that's a downgrade and that's not supported. To get to 22.05 you need to come from 2.6.

Version 2.6 stable >upgrade>to> 22.05 stable

Version 2.7 Developer >upgrade>to> 22.09 or 22.11 Developer

Could the backup file be exchanged between dev and stable?

You can use a backup from Stable in Dev but not the other way around. You can always import an earlier config but stable doesn't know about some of the values in the dev config file version.
I will allow you to try and you might be lucky, your config might not contain any of the new layout.

Any up to date news with regards to Intel i226-V 2.5G NIC support in any stable versions of pfSense.

I too have one of those little fanless systems arriving next week. It would be nice to know I can put pfSense on it when it arrives, other wise I might have to resort to OpnSense or OpenWRT just so i can play with it.

Id rather just install pfSense and be done if poss.

2.6 supports some i226 NICs. If it's one of the PCI IDs shown here it should work:

Otherwise 2.7 snapshots have the current i226 support from FreeBSD main.

@stephenw10 I ran pciconf -l in a shell to see the device IDs. They are 0x125C which is on the list linked above.
I have one of these 4x Intel i226-V "fanless" PCs. 2.7.0 DEV works, but after reading this thread, it seems there is no practical path to upgrading to Plus. So I'm thinking about starting over with 2.6 if it supports my NICs, which theoretically would let me switch to the Upgrade branch for a 22.05 upgrade?
With 2.7.0 DEV, when I select Upgrade branch, it only offers 22.01, which would leave me "NICless", and nobody wants to be NICless before Christmas! ;-)

Yes, I would try booting the 2.6 installer. You should see the igc NICs in the boot logs without needing to install to test.

@stephenw10 I decided to give Proxmox a try and virtualize those i226 out of existence. I installed pfSense 2.6.0 in a VM, but it still wanted to upgrade to 22.01, so I did, then it offered 22.05, or 23.01 on dev. So I think there's a requirement to install 22.01 before 22.05 which is going to make trouble for people with i226 NICs on bare metal. Now on to learning all about vlans!

Mmm, you certainly can do it using a USB NIC but it's a long way to get to the final install.
