Dynamic DNS fails to extract IP from checkip.dyndns.org

I have this problem on a number of pfsense firewalls.
I configure Dynamic DNS, and it just doesn't update…until the _n_th try.

The system log shows the following entrys:

Oct 31 11:35:28	php-fpm	97883	/services_dyndns_edit.php: Dynamic DNS dyns (*******.dyns.cx): IP address could not be extracted from checkip.dyndns.org

Provided that log entry is accurate, it's telling me that the pfsense could not parse the html response from http://checkip.dyndns.org/

That seems like the easy part.  (login into various dynamic DNS sites and updating records is the hard part)

So what gives?  Why does it keep failing on this easy first step? Feels like the code needs a tweak.
I can  check that this address works from behind the pfsense.
