Network switch in addition to SG-2440
-
Hi guys,
Would you please share your opinion and suggest network switch best suitable for SG-2440. As I understand I have 3 available gigabit ports on pfsense to plug my devices. If I need approximately 5 ports, how I should go about it?
Thank you

An SG-2440 has four router ports.
If you want 5 ports on LAN. you should connect a switch to one of them and connect your devices to that. Any switch will probably do for that.

This is depending on what your needs are!You can go by a smaller Layer2 variant such as;
Netgear GS105E, GS108E, GS116E and JGS524E
Cisco SG100, SG200
Zyxel GS1900, GS1910 or GS2200 Series
TP-Link various modelsOr Layer3 variant;
Cisco SG300-10
D-Link DGS1510-20 -
Or Layer3 variant
Unless he's planning on doing additional routing, a layer 3 switch won't help. Logically, a router and layer 3 switch are the same thing.

Pending on my small home Network I bought two small Cisco Switches;
- Cisco SG200-10 (Layer2) for the DMZ
- Cisco SG300-10 (Layer3) fo the LAN
But if I decide me in the near future to Change the NAS, I must perhaps decide between
10 GBit/s and/or Thunderbolt II, if I go with a Thunderbolt II NAS all can be as it is now,
but if I decide me to go the way with the 10 GBit/s NAS I would more having a look by my
self on the D-Link DGS1510-20 it is also a Layer3 Switch but with two SFP and two SFP+
Ports!!! All is pending on the needs as I see it right.For a normal small Network without the needs of a Layer3 Switch you may be also good sorted
with the Layer2 variant (SG200) but if the IPTV is in the game and you will need a IGMPv3 Proxy
and/or IGMPv3 snooping and on the top you must pump greater files from the PC to a NAS it might
be better to go with a smaller Layer3 Switch that is routing that stuff from VLAN to VLAN with nearly
wire speed, and not all through the firewall! Sure if you have not that needs you will be also fine with
a small Layer2 Switch, but again from that Cisco SG200-10 you will get a famous GUI and many features
or options that would be not given by any other vendor in that price class!So you will see it might be really pending on your needs, what kind of devices and with what goal
you want to feed and serve by that switch would be nice to know at first for sure.Budget:
Netgear GS105E VLANs
Netgear GS108E VLANs
Netgear GS108Tv2(v3) VLANs & LAGMy choice
Cisco SG200-10 is Layer2 is needed
Cisco SG300-10 if Layer3 is needed
D-Link DGS1510-20 if 10 GbE is neededWhat are your needs for the 5 devices?

I'm a fan of the TP-Link TL-SG108E. 8 port gigabit "smart" switch for not much more money ($35 US) than a dumb switch. Can do VLANs and other basic Layer 2 switch functions and the price is right. I have 2 of them and they're rock solid so far.

Thank you Frank for your write up.
I will repost when I am ready to describe my needs for the devices I have at home. I think it will be easier for you guys to suggest the appropriate switch for my needs. Thanks
