I'm trying to discern if my APU2C4 is toast, or if I just need to plug in a SP1A flash recovery board. I get no output from the APU2C4 in Putty and the only LED the shines is the Power LED. None of the NICs light up.

Would this be the expected behavior of an APU when shorting RTC CLR?

I would expect to see the other LEDs light when it comes out of standby power mode.

Try removing the power completely for at least 20mins if you haven't already. I have seen the APU1 get stuck like that, probably a failing capacitor somewhere. Once it POSTs it fine though.

Thank you Stephen. I just powered the unit back up (having been removed from power for 3 or 4 days). Only the single LED lights up (none of the others on the front, nor the NIC LEDs. No POST message either.

          • would POST be visible if my unit was bricked?
          • none of the SMD components, nor the electrolytics look bulging or burned out.

Would you say that this board is toast, or is there a possibility that I just need the SP1A recovery board?

            No internal LEDs either?

If you have a flash access device it's worth trying but it doesn't look good IMO.

The only internal LED that I notice is for the 16GB mSATA. It flashes on and then off.

Mmm, well that doesn't look good me. 😬

You might try asking one the PCEngines forum though.

Install the SPI.1A module on the SPI header of the apu2 system board. Please watch the orientation (white stripe).

                  Then power on.

The SPI module will override the on-board flash, which could be blank or corrupted.

Boot tinyCore Linux or another OS from an USB stick.

Then remove the SPI module while power is on, and reflash the BIOS, from the booted system (OS).

Then all will be fine for you
