Reinstalling confusion re: 'Tip'
-
Hello,
In the doc for Reinstalling pfSense Software,
the Tip below steps 3 and 4 has me confused:
3. Connect to the console port of the Netgate device.
4. Insert the memstick into the USB port and boot the system.
Tip
The best practice is to turn off the device, insert the USB memstick, confirm console access, and boot the device.
Starting the recovery process requires interrupting the boot process very soon after the boot process begins. If I have turned off the device, how will I confirm console access.
Also, in that sentence, does 'boot the device' entail simply turning on the device?
Finally, the 'tip' seems to be contrary to steps 3 and 4, am I missing something?
Thank you!

@rcoleman-netgate Thank you Ryan,
Looks like a SG-1100 may not be one of those devices :)
After unplugging the power cord on the SG-1100, and connecting a mac to it via the console cable, I did not see any lights on the device and was unable to connect using 'screen'.
I was successful following steps 3 and 4, with the device plugged in, and ignoring the 'Tip'.
Thanks!

It definitely is in that list. If your cable is not connected snugly it could be spotty and have issues.
The only firewall I've had an issue with, and it was spotty, was the 5100.
