I inherited from my predecessor an old Pfsense in version 2.3.5. The application runs without complaint but is completely undocumented.
Unfortunately, the machine claims that it exists in the latest version and does not update / upgrade.
How can I solve the dilemma?

      Thanks in advance

You also need to check the hardware and type of install. If it's running a 32-bit version (i386), it may be on the latest because that architecture is no longer supported and 2.3.x was the last release for it. If the hardware itself is 64-bit capable, then it would need to be reinstalled, not upgraded in place. If the hardware is 32-bit, then you need a new firewall device since that one is obsolete.

            Thanks Guys,

my hope was I could upgrade from the home office. But as it looks I have to do a new installation on site.

            Thank you

@ewuewu In addition to all the above advice, there is this:
              https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/troubleshooting/upgrades.html#upgrade-not-offered-library-errors

...but I have seen Netgate post more than once that they suggest reinstalling and restoring the config from backup if it is several versions old. If you really do try upgrading, (and get pfSense to see updates), at a minimum I'd try to upgrade to "previous stable version" first instead of trying the latest, then upgrading again. But, plan on/prep for a reinstall and then you won't be disappointed if the upgrade goes haywire and the router is offline.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.
