FW-7551 pfSense® Firewall Hardware Appliance failed upgrade to latest version
-
I'm not a linux or BSD expert (or even power user) and am looking for direction. I have the above firewall, told it to update to the latest version and now have a non-functioning firewall.
I beeps once upon starting and then checking the console output I end up with:
F1 pfSense
F6 PXE
Boot: F1
/boot/config: # $FreeBSD$
FreeBSD/x86 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)$FreeBSD$
boot:
No $FreeBSD$FreeBSD/x86 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)$FreeBSD$
boot:
Any pointers on where to start?

Additional information, to my inexpert eye it looks like the boot loaded configuration got munged somehow. If I type in: 0:ad(0,1,a)/boot/loader
It will load to this menu:
_ __ / / | ___ _ __ ___ ___
| ' | |_ \ / _ \ '_ / |/ _ \
| |) | |) | / | | _ \ /
| ./|| |___/ _|| ||/_|
||+============Welcome to pfSense===========+

| 1. Boot Multi User [Enter] | / \
| 2. Boot ~~ingle User | / f \
| 3. [Esc]ape to loader prompt | / \ /
| 4. Reboot | / p _/ Sense

| Options: | _____/ \
| 5. [K]ernel: kernel (1 of 2) | \ /
| 6. Configure Boot [O]ptions… | ______/
| |
| |
| |

Autoboot in 2 seconds. [Space] to pauseIt boots to number 1 and after that the system seems fine.
So how do I fix the bootloader menu?~~

Glad you got it to boot.
You probably wont be able to fix the boot loader menu. This is serial connection? I assume it is. I'm no expert on serial connection, but my experience is serial connection is old and buggy. Sometimes the issue lie with the client not able to keep up with the output on the host. Sometimes the host not able to slow down the data rate accurately. It most likely has to do with your FW-7551 device speeding up or slowing down on boot.
Try a different clients like putty or teraterm (windows), or minicom on linux. You may get different result. But your issue here is minor. You already know what your options are, and will rarely use this menu anyways.
Your FW7551 may have vga pinout in which you could hook up vga cable to a monitor. The menu should display fine on vga.

I went ahead and loaded the CE edition and then restored a backup I had of the configuration. As far as I can tell the only thing different is that I lost a couple wizards AWS and IPSEC that I wasn't using.
So using a memstick AMD64 serial out, no problems loaded the community edition and I feel more comfortable knowing that if the SSD dies I know how to replace it and reload it.
Thanks!
