      Hi All,

      After updating to 23.01, the startup/shutdown beep does not work.

      Does this happen to anyone else?

      Regards

        Status > System Logs > System > OS Boot
        WARNING: Device "spkr" is Giant locked and may be deleted before FreeBSD 14.0.

        My (invented) explanation : before, the kernel was playing with the hardware with the very rudimentary PC-legacy speaker output pin.
        Even that has been dropped now.
        An no one bothered to wrote a driver for it yet.

        Btw : Didn't we saw already saw this question recently ?

        edit : more spkr stories : https://forum.netgate.com/topic/177915/23-01-internal-speaker-no-longer-works-device-spkr-is-giant-locked?_=1676965546927

        Edit : and where are the logs ??

          @gertjan

          Thanks for the information.

          Yes, I can see it in the log now:

          WARNING: Device "spkr" is Giant locked and may be deleted before FreeBSD 14.0.

            @matyi-szabolcs

            Did you activate the speaker as showed in the other thread ?
            I'm not using a PC type device anymore, so I can't test :

            sysctl kern.vt.enable_bell=1

                @gertjan said in After updating to 23.01, the startup/shutdown beep does not work.:

                kern.vt.enable_bell=1

                Yes, that solved the problem.

                  Hi,

                  I see the same warning in my logs.
                  But I could hear startup/shutdown tones, but no login beeps after upgrading to 23.01.
                  Do we need to create a ticket in issue tracker or it is already being tracked?

                    I wrote above that the problem was solved.
