“ you install ZFS you can can roll back between versions”

That’s good news if its only limited to “newer” versions.

Hi all I see on the internet allot of complains regarding the i225-V and i226-V.
For the i225-V have performance problems and no good for more than 1Gb
And the i226-V have connections drop issues.
I assume that these are Windows users so I am wandering if any one here using i226-V with pfsense are heaving problems?

The i225-V issues with hardware versions before rev3 seemed to affect all OS types. I saw reports of issues there in FreeBSD. I have not seen any issues with the rev3 NICs we have in the 6100. Not have I seen any problems with the i226-V NICs in the 8200.

No issues with 5 I-225's here.... one dual port.

That is supposed to say "That's good news EVEN if its only limited to newer versions."

@stephenw10 Would it be possible to view the revision # via CLI in pfsense?

                Thank you!

Yes, you can see it in the output of pciconf:

How is the little box working now?

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been watching as am curious about getting one of these as well.

Greatly appreciated you taking the time to explain this.
Managed to install it using two USBs, after upgrade I was able to switch it to the i226 ports.

                        Cheers!

@jimbob-indiana No problems at all with the Topton Model-A N5105. Been running 24x7 for 3 months (outside of power outages).

Despite that, I think if I was going to do it again I would probably just buy the netgate 2100. In hindsight, for my home use, I think it would be better to have an embedded, dedicated device to do the firewalling, and I didn't really HAVE to have the 2.5Gb ports on the firewall. If you plan to boost your Internet speed beyond 1Gb, then maybe its worth it to someone to roll your own to save some money. In my case, I just wanted to do it for "fun".
But I could have used the little PC to run VMs for other less critical tasks where you can experiment without taking the Internet down; route between your VLANs, run Pi hole, etc.
Despite the so-far-so-good outcome, I have trouble trusting that this little PC is going to be good for the long haul. Maybe I worry too much... but I feel the netgate is an embedded, low power, low heat device made to last. An aliexpress PC is a big 'who knows'. If it breaks, who am I going to call for warranty and how long (if ever) to get it replaced? Now that pfsense is all configured in a VM, I don't want to slow it down or put anything on there that could compromise security or reliability. IMHO, A PC is really overkill as a pfsense only box and that's what I've ended up doing. YRMV

I can't get 2.6 or 2.7 installed on this device:

Firewall Hardware, Intel Celeron Qaud Core J4125, HUNSN RS17k, Pfsense Plus, OPNsense, Mikrotik, VPN, Network Appliance, Router PC, AES-NI, 4 x Intel I226-V 2.5Gbe, Console, VGA, 8G RAM, 64G SSD

Any idea how to get CE installed on this? Doesn't detect NICs and install fails :(

2.7 just shows no NICs? Does it show attach failures in the boot log?

What are the PCI IDs those NICs appear as if you boot something else?

I too am about to put a Topton Model A device in place at home.

Can anyone recommend a USB to Ethernet adapter available on Amazon UK? I'm hoping to get this sorted in the next few days.

The one advantage I do have is that my existing system has a m.2 pcie slot, is it possible I could put the new hard drive into my existing PC, install 2.6, update to 23.01, then remove the drive and plug it into the Topton? Would that work?

If not I guess I'll have to go down the USB to Ethernet route, which I understand I'd need two of? Not 100% on what the best way to get it working is, would I just set it up from scratch like my existing setup, ie plug wan into wan and lan into lan, or connect the Topton to my existing working LAN and somehow update it that way?

                                Thanks!

That would work. You would need to re-assign the interfaces at the console at first boot on the i226 device. And the NDI would be different so you would need to re-register it.
If you wait a few days it should be possible to upgrade to 23.01 from 2.7 which should remove this issue.

I may try that then rather than going down the USB nic route.

Not sure if I understand you regarding waiting a few days, according to https://redmine.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/roadmap 2.7 final looks to be a long way off, 80+ bugs still open.

I used two TP-Link UE306 USB to Ethernet Adapters to install my hardware with PFSENSE 2.6. It works just fine now, but I had to immediately connect the USBs on install, so that on reboot it would detect them quickly enough.

Further, make sure Ethernet cables are connected, so the interfaces come up.

After install, reboot, and define the WAN/LAN. Connect your PC/Laptop to the LAN side and login to the GUI on 192.168.1.1.

In the update settings you can then upgrade to PFSENSE+ with your license, and then again after reboot, (important!!), trigger the upgrade to 23.01.

The wait is for switching the CE > Plus upgrade repo to 23.01. Currently it's 22.01 which means you can only upgrade to it from 2.6.
