Only one Ethernet port working on Braswell N3150 (latest stable and 2.4)
-
Hi,
Based on recommendations in a thread here, I picked up a board with a Braswell N3150 & 2 LAN from AliExpress. One ethernet port works - the one next to the HDMI ports - but the other doesn't. My issue seems similar to some in the thread pfSense with Gigabyte GA-J1900N-D3V, but from posts here, it seems that other people have set up pfSense on the same board as mine with no problems. I tested Ubuntu, and both ports work perfectly.
Any ideas? Would an alpha version of pfSense be worth a try?
Edit: I installed the latest 2.4 development snapshot and the problem is reversed: re0 works, while re1 doesn't work - the LED lights up, but no traffic gets through. Well, so far the only traffic I've seen is a UDP packet from the pfSense box when I tried to do a trace route. Is this just a config issue or something?

Then the board itself could be faulty and/or the others get an other board such yours is, it is similar but not
the same I guess!I tested Ubuntu, and both ports work perfectly.
What is running fine under Linux, must not be matching to FreeBSD too! Both are "unix like" systems but not the same!
BSD is BSD and Linux is Linux.Any ideas? Would an alpha version of pfSense be worth a try?
It could be that this might be a really chance, but without any promise to get rid of that problem.

It might be sounding strong, but can it be that there is something in the BIOS you could try out to set up different as now!?

I have the same unit but from an amazon seller.
Both my realtek ports work fine, but since I want intel I did end up fitting a intel mini pci-e card and now use the 2 intel ports from that.
Its a great device, and is a real shame it has realtek instead of intel nic's included as otherwise I think would be perfection.
But yeah faulty unit I think you got as both my ports worked.

I apologise, my information was incorrect.
One of my realtek ports is indeed not working, it is recognised on bootup in dmesg, but like the OP simply wont pass traffic. I am not affected as I have fitted a dual port intel mini pcie card but discovered the issue when I was testing using the realtek ports.
An observation is the hardware MAC of the 2 realtek ports are not neighbouring id's which is odd, as normally dual nic devices will have neighbouring mac id's, this suggests it is possibly two one port realtek units bolted on as a pair which may be causing pfsense(freebsd) to not work properly with them.

how did you fit the intel dual nic? what card did you buy? can you please post some pics of this mod?

there is a sort of diary about my build here including the pics.

Sadly my card can no longer be purchased, I was 50/50 in buying it but I found it very hard to find a supplier and due to lack of suppliers I had a gut feeling it would be going off market so decided to purchase it at a not very cheap price of circa £50, even the google cache link is dead now.
if you dont want to read entire thread, the post with pics of finished build is here.

My unit came with a wireless card pre fitted, that was removed first to free up the mini pcie slot.
I am trying to find the receipt email because without opening my unit up again its probably the only way I am going to find the exact model of what I purchased.
But it is a jetway mini pcie intel dual nic addon card, the 2 ports are intel i350 chipset. It did come with the bracket as well.

ok scroll down to these 2 products at http://www.jetwaycomputer.com/Expansion.html
ADMPEIDLA <–- I am pretty sure mine is this one.
and
ADMPEIDLB
It is one of those 2 but dont know which without opening. But I dont think you can order of that site and cannot find someone selling it now.
yeah I think it is the first one, I took this pic with the unit open at an earlier date, sadly it is blurred but can see it looks like the ADMPEIDLA

Yeah, this box would be perfect with Intel NICs. At this point I wish I had gone with a mini ITX build with Intel NICs. For now, I'm using the one working NIC with VLANs so I can have WAN & LAN on one cable.
I downloaded the realtek drivers from their website and compiled them on a FreeBSD virtual machine (got the idea from a discussion on this forum), and then loaded them on my pfSense box. The craziest thing is that both NICs started working! But then I restarted and it was back to only one NIC. I haven't been able to get them both working since.
