That would work. You would need to re-assign the interfaces at the console at first boot on the i226 device. And the NDI would be different so you would need to re-register it.
If you wait a few days it should be possible to upgrade to 23.01 from 2.7 which should remove this issue.Steve

I may try that then rather than going down the USB nic route.
Not sure if I understand you regarding waiting a few days, according to https://redmine.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/roadmap 2.7 final looks to be a long way off, 80+ bugs still open.

I used two TP-Link UE306 USB to Ethernet Adapters to install my hardware with PFSENSE 2.6. It works just fine now, but I had to immediately connect the USBs on install, so that on reboot it would detect them quickly enough.
Further, make sure Ethernet cables are connected, so the interfaces come up.
After install, reboot, and define the WAN/LAN. Connect your PC/Laptop to the LAN side and login to the GUI on 192.168.1.1.
In the update settings you can then upgrade to PFSENSE+ with your license, and then again after reboot, (important!!), trigger the upgrade to 23.01.

The wait is for switching the CE > Plus upgrade repo to 23.01. Currently it's 22.01 which means you can only upgrade to it from 2.6.

Can you please advise the upgrade path that may be available in a few days time?
Would it be a 2.7 dev snapshot, to 23.01 plus?

Exactly, it should be possible to upgrade from a 2.7 snapshot directly which avoids the need for USB NICs and the subsequent NDI change.

As soon as I can I’ll be updating to the + version but as noted I’m not going to as long as there’s too much fooling around.
Seems like 2.7 on the verge of being finished.

Well that was an absolute nightmare, but 6 hours later and I'm back up and running on the Topton.
I don't want to go through that again any time soon

pfSense 2.7 Dev means under development
Dev = under development
RC = Release candidate
Release = fully version -
Not sure what you're trying to say. Some how you think I don't understand 2.7 is currently a development version?

@jimbob-indiana I think what he probably meant was that it's not even a Release Candidate yet, so probably still quite a way off being released?
I stupidly bought some i226-V hardware last year, imagining 2.7 would be out any time soon and here I am months later still unable to use it. 2023 hardware will be faster/better/cheaper so I am regretting my 2022 purchase already.
It's a shame this is taking SO long, especially given that security support for FreeBSD 12.3 has already ended and ditto PHP 7.4. Unlikely but if a serious security flaw is found in FreeBSD 12.3, then potentially we are stuffed.
I seriously think that under the circumstances it is unreasonable of Netgate to not release a standalone Plus installer. They have one, and indeed have provided it (by accident) to other user(s) and it works fine.

@chippy_boy the 2.7.0 Devel build has been working well for me for several months now. Maybe I've tripped on some things that weren't quite ready and just didn't know it, but I'm up and running with Intel i226-V NICs. I'd like to update to 23.01 as soon as I can do so as a direct upgrade. Until then I'll keep running 2.7.0 and update the build to keep current.

I've been nervous about Dev builds in my live environment though TBH. Were it not so critical as your firewall, then I might have been less concerned but given the potential security risks, it's not something I am immediately attracted by.
My issue right now is anyway not on my live environment, it's merely my backup onto which I cannot (easily) install pfsense. So I am OK for now on 2.6 (ending of FreeBSD support notwithstanding). But if I have a hardware failure, I am toast since I have nothing to fail over to.
