package list empty - pfsense version v old but shows as up to date??
-
I noticed the available packages list was empty (havn't had to look at it for literally years), and a bit of digging shows version problems 'cos its an old version of pfsense.
I'm running a Netgate SG-1100
I am showing
2.4.4-RELEASE-p3 (arm64) built on Thu May 16 06:01:19 EDT 2019 FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p10 The system is on the latest version.
but pkg-static -d update
eventually failspkg-static: repository pfSense contains packages for wrong OS version: FreeBSD:12:aarch64
I noticed the addblocker seemed to have caused a few problems, so I uninstalled that, but system is still showing as up-to-date and still get the same error msg from pkg-static -d update

Yeah, that's a really old version. You will have to set the update repo to previous version in System > Updates > Update Settings. However if it has been set to Latest Stable all this time it probably has a newer repo list than anything that includes 2.4.4p3.
Ultimately you should upgrade to the current version. You might consider just installing 23.01 clean and restoring your config into it. Open a ticket with us to get the image:

@stephenw10 It did let me upgrade after downgrading the version in update settings, but after the update it just stuck in booting (boot in progress), so it looks like a rebuild.....

@pootle
a) allow 15-30 minutes for an upgrade
b) if it's an old enough unit the upgrade to 23.01 will likely stop, saying the EFI partition is too small. Solution is to upgrade via image file as noted above. TAC will link you to here: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/reinstall-pfsense.html -
Where are you seeing that? At the console?
A clean install is probably a good idea anyway though.

@steveits said in package list empty - pfsense version v old but shows as up to date??:
a) allow 15-30 minutes for an upgrade
For full OS updates like that I would allow 30-60 for the upgrade -- the online portion of it is tiny. When I moved from 2.5.1 to 2.6 on my old DC edge it took 90 minutes to complete.

Many thanks to all for the help and advice, took a little longer, mostly because nearly all my usb -> microUSB cables didn't connect at the micro-usb end - The socket is slightly recessed, and I was beginning to think it was bricked. Eventually found a cable where the metal plug protruded a tiny bit further than the others, and lo there was a ttyUSB0 device!
After that everything went by the book remarkably easily
Very impressed with Netgate's support - almost instant reply to my TAC :)

@pootle I don't recommend everyone do this because it is dangerous but you can shave the last 1/8" (3mm) off a shroud to get it to fit most things!
