No SG-1000 Upgrade?
-
Hi, I own an SG-1000 (the micro firewall) and I am happy with it (IoT isolation). The UI says that it's on pfSense+ version 21.05.1 and latest base system is 23.01. Update through the UI does not work, as the system is too slow. Update through SSH says: "ERROR: The Netgate SG-1000 cannot be upgraded. There are no new releases for the SG-1000."
What does that mean exactly? I know that the device is no longer produced, but do I have to throw it away now? Not even security updates? I thought pfSense+ is a software with wide support that isn't really device-dependent.
There's not even a comparable replacement device (the Netgate 1100 seems to be much bigger and doesn't even have a metal case) - and I don't want to throw away a working device.

@e4ch While I hear ya, the EOL date for the sg1000 was oct 2019.. EOS was oct 2018.. 21.05 is like 2 years after the EOL date..
My personal take on it, again I am not netgate and have no extra insight to their business or anything like that.. I am just here on the forums a lot ;)
23.01 is a huge update, went from freebsd 12.3 to 14.. Update to php, etc.. My take is the effort to run pfsense on that old hardware that is ARM based an requires special stuff for pfsense to run on, unlike generic x86_64 hardware.. Prob just not worth the effort for a device that was EOL like 3.5 years ago..
Its prob time you look for a replacement. I know it sucks - but electronics don't last forever.. I am in the same sort of boat while my 4860 has been eol for since 2020.. I love it, and it does everything I need/want it to do.. So don't have any plans on replacing anytime soon.. Only advantage for me I think is mine doesn't run on arm, etc. But I will prob need to update here at some point soon.
The guy that would know for sure if there is a way to get current version on the SG-1000 would be @stephenw10

@johnpoz Hmm. Thanks for reply. If it really requires special drivers or something that no longer exist, that would be understandable. I would also be willing to switch to the Community Edition or whatever, if that's an option.
I don't care much about the money, but I don't want to waste working electronics.
I also have two 4860 by the way. I didn't even know they were out of support and they run on the latest firmware. One of them was never used and just works as a backup device in case of device failure, as I cannot afford them being down for some weeks until a new device arrives. (The 4860s are a different topic though.)

No update because FreeBSD 14 is not compatible with the hardware.
You can get 22.05 from TAC for the 1000 -- just open a ticket at https://go.netgate.comYou can also apply system patches once on 22.05 and get your 1000 as up-to-date as it can get: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/development/system-patches.html

You should see 22.05 available as the previous version in the drop down. It should be possible to update to that from 21.05.
But, yes, you can always re-install 22.05 clean to get to it.Steve
