Akismet - ugh!

My posts on using OpenVPN are all being flagged as spam by Akismet. I need help, how do I get around this?
-
@tangooversway You need a reputation boost by upvotes. Here's one.
See https://forum.netgate.com/topic/179297/unable-to-post-flagged-as-spam-by-akismet-com/10 -
@steveits I see there people recommended that he post without images - I tried that and didn't get flagged by Akismet, but got server errors every time I tried posting in that topic.
Looks like he got a boost when an admin gave him one, not from upvotes.

Nope, the upvotes are what give you the reputation. Doesn't matter who gives them to you or where. You have >5 now.

In that particular thread, the admin apparently fixed it, or that's what it looks like in context. But if that's not the case, then to get help, I have to make more posts for no real reason other than to get reputation so after I make those pointless posts, I can get help.

@tangooversway StephenW is that admin. :) But yeah. I think the point is to let regular users slide a bit but block people who create an account and post spam. Which happens occasionally but the forum does seem rather good at blocking it (and/or the moderators are really fast). As in the other posts usually regulars or admins will upvote for you.

Akismet is best bad option unfortunately. Without any spam filtering it's a flood!

I get that, and I understand administrating a board and cleaning out spam is frustrating. But it's also frustrating when a forum is part of a support network for a commercial product and in order to get help, you have to first jump through hoops. I've made other posts spanning a few years. I bought my Netgate appliance a couple years ago and had issues with setting it up. (It's working now - other than the VPN issue.) But help requests on forums generally aren't going to get upvotes unless they ask for help with an issue multiple people have.
It seems to me a good compromise might be for Akismet to flag a posts then add a CAPTCHA (yeah, I hate 'em - get 'em a lot with my proxy service sometimes) and a question, "Do you want this post to be approved by an administrator who can verify it's not spam?" That way, if you need help, and don't know the system well enough to help others, it doesn't lead to karma whoring with posts nobody needs to make or read to be able to ask for help. (Side note - I didn't even notice the upvote button until this discussion.)
I'm also wondering if, once Akismet flags you, it changes something to indicate to look more closely at your account. While I was able to make my post here, every post after that which I tried to make in the OpenVPN topic had server errors. I don't know why and I don't know what the errors are - the software didn't report it.

I don't know how much Netgate modifies this forum software. (It looks like other forums I've seen.) But would something like what I suggested in my reply to SteveITS work? Maybe provide a way for the user to say, "Please have an admin look at this?"
Oh, and, yes, I see you guys are upvoting my posts here. Thanks!
When this wouldn't post, I went to the OpenVPN subreddit and asked it there. I know people hate cross-posting issues, so I'll give it time to see if I get answers there before I try redoing my post here.

The Akismet plugin for NodeBB has basically zero configuration options. The only thing you can set is the reputation level above which it no longer applies.
